Wood Siding

For more than three decades Carolina Colortones has been a reliable source for quality western red cedar siding and trim. Bevel sidings, shingles and shingle panels, board-on-board, log siding channel rustic and tongue and groove products are all available prefinished.

We also offer multiple pine species and cypress siding and trim products. Having multiple sources ensures on-time deliveries and specific length requests.

Benefits of Prefinishing Before Installation

In order to obtain optimum performance of Western Red Cedar, the WRCLA* recommends that it is pre-primed or pre-finished prior to job site delivery. The benefits of prefinishing at Carolina Colortones facility with the unique ColortonesComplete process are:

  • Each board is uniformly coated at the recommended coverage of the stain/color
  • Storage and drying occurs in a controlled, protected environment so that each board is free of dust and debris and not exposed to sunlight and moisture
  • The prefinished material does not produce lap marks, streaks and shrink lines after installation and can be installed at any time of the year

Wavy Edge Wood Sidings

Some know it as Mountain Siding, some call it Carolina Siding, but they all agree that it looks really good on the side of a rustic leaning home.  Comes in white pine and western red cedar species.

Eastern White Shingles

Eastern White Shingles

Premium Grade Eastern White Cedar

These shingles are 100% heartwood with no defects on any surface. Much lighter in color than western red cedar, these premiums look best with semi-solid and solid stains. These shingles are rebutted and resquared (R&R) with a sanded face.

Coverage: 1 box = 25 square feet at 5” exposure (maximum)

Select Grade Eastern White Cedar

These shingles have some heartwood and some defects (knots) but not in the exposed face. Solid stains, primers and paint are recommended for this grade. These shingles are rebutted and resquared (R&R) with a sanded face.

Coverage: 1 box = 25 square feet at 5” exposure (maximum)

Finishing Recommendations

Eastern white cedar, while not as durable as western red, is a fine product for exterior use. For maximum longevity for eastern white cedar shingles use a higher solid finish (semi-solid stains, solid stains or paints) that better protects the shingle from cupping and splitting. We typically recommend an oil-based finish for better penetration of the sanded face (see oil vs. water in the Colors section).

Warranties

5-15 year warranties are available for particular finishes on eastern white cedar shingles.

Clear Stains

clear stainsThese stains are specially formulated with a unique blend of resin and oil to provide superior natural finish for bare wood. The stain accents the beauty of natural wood and provides protection against the damaging effects of moisture, helping guard the wood against warping, checking, and mildew.

Choose from Cabot Clear Solution and PreservaWood Clear Stain, which can be applied to all natural wood. Depending on exposure and wear, evaluate re-staining needs every 1-4 years.

Life Expectancy: 1-3 years, no finish warranty

Oil Semi-Transparent Stains

oil semi-transparentDeep penetrating, oil-based stains beautify and protect exterior wood. These lightly pigmented stains enhance the natural beauty of the wood by allowing the grain, texture, and color variations within the wood to show through. They are water repellant, mildew resistant and, when properly applied, won’t crack, peel or blister.

Cabot and Sherwin Williams have Semi-Transparent Stains for use on exterior wood siding, shingles, shakes, and roofs. They are especially effective on roughly sawed surfaces. Excellent results are also obtained on premium grade lumber such as cedar, fir, pine, cypress, spruce, redwood, and plywood.

Life Expectancy: 2-5 years, 5-year warranty available

Oil Semi-Solid Stains

oil semi-solid stainsRichly pigmented, deep penetrating oil-based stains provide long lasting beauty and wood protection. These unique stains provide greater hiding power than semi-transparent stains, while the attractive flat finish highlights the natural beauty of the wood’s texture. With the extra pigmentation, Semi-Solid Stains are durable and help protect wood against the sun’s damaging ultraviolet rays. They are also water-repellent, mildew resistant and, when properly applied, won’t crack, peel or blister.

Semi-Solid Stains are ideal for use when wood hiding coverage is desired, yet penetrating wood protection is needed. They also provide an outstanding value as a one-coat finish for re-coating previously semi-transparent stained surfaces. Semi-Solid Stains are available from Cabot only and can be used on most types of smooth and rough exterior wood, including siding, shingles, and roofs. They provide excellent results on recommended weathered wood and well-seasoned lumber such as cedar, fir, pine, cypress, spruce, redwood, and plywood.

Life Expectancy: 2-5 years, no finish warranty

Solid Stains

Cabot Oil and Acrylic Solid Color Stains

cabot oil and acrylic solid color stainsA premium finish for wood siding and trim, the solid color oil formulations are stains that are oil-based, offering tremendous hiding power as well as resisting cracking, peeling and blistering. These stains produce a water-repellent, mildew-resistant, durable, flat finish that will last for years.

We carry 29 traditional colors. The solid color 100% acrylic formulation guarantees against cracking, peeling and blistering for 12 years on new wood. Solid Color Acrylic Stains are richly pigmented, fade resistant and provide a flat, opaque finish that is water repellent and mildew resistant.

Cabot One-Coat Low-Lustre

Combines the durability and penetration of an alkyd oil stain with the adhesive and extractive bleed-preventing properties of a primer. The result is a unique product that, in just one coat, offers outstanding durability backed by a 5-year written warranty.

Sherwin Williams – Super Paint for Machine Finish

sherwin williamsProvides a long-lasting, fade-resistant finish that is 100% acrylic based. The Machine Finish is formulated specifically for factory application and is mildew resistant, water repellent, and resists marring and scratching. This product can be used on both wood and cement board siding and trim. Super Paint carries a 25-year warranty. Unlimited colors are available.

Cabot Factory Finish

cabot factory finishThe Factory Finish is formulated specifically for machine application and is mildew resistant, water repellent and resists marring and scratching. This Cabot product can be used on both wood and cement board. One coat of Factory Finish is warranted for five years, two coats for 15 years. With a coat of Cabot’s The Finish in the Field, the warranty will extend five more years. Unlimited colors are available.

About Life Expectancy

Our life expectancy timelines provide a realistic expectation of how long a finish might last. The life expectancy of a finish is highly dependent on type and degree of exposure to external/environmental factors. These timelines are NOT warranties.

Oil vs Water

Most stains are available in both oil and water-based products. We provide either type (only water-based products are used on fiber cement). The Western Red Cedar Lumber Association recommends oil based stains and primers, which is our default product of choice for wood.

If water based stain is desired, two coats are typically required versus one coat of the same product in oil. This is because oil stains penetrate much better than water based counterparts.

Custom Color Matching

We specialize in custom colors. Choose from the color palette of any paint brand and we can match it with solid color stain or paint. Have a special color in mind? Provide a sample and we can do that too.

While transparent and semi-transparent colors are more difficult to custom match, we use the most popular brands including Cabot, Sherwin Williams, Duckback, Olympic, and Sikkens. This means you have extraordinary variety.

Warranty Information

Manufacturer warranties are available for many of the finishes we offer. Copies of warranties are included with your order. READ WARRANTIES CAREFULLY. Warranties require registration and may require periodic maintenance.
