Fiber Cement Board & Batten Siding

Board & batten pairs large vertical fiber cement panels with vertical battens for the modern farmhouse look. We pre-finish HardiePanel, Allura and Nichiha panels together with their battens in one color run, so the finished wall has no color break.

Key Facts

  • Board & batten pairs large vertical panels (typically 4′ × 8′, 9′ or 10′) with vertical battens placed 12″ to 24″ on center.
  • The style drives the “modern farmhouse” exterior — one of the most-requested looks in current residential design.
  • In fiber cement it is achieved with smooth or textured panel (e.g. HardiePanel) plus matching trim battens, all pre-finished in one color run.
  • Vertical installation sheds water efficiently; panel seams land on battens, so fasteners and joints are concealed.

What is board & batten?

Board & batten is a vertical siding pattern: wide flat boards (today, large panels) with narrow battens covering the seams. Historically a barn technique, it is now the signature of farmhouse and transitional design. Fiber cement executes it without wood’s vertical-siding weak point — water wicking into end grain at the bottom of every board. It is one of the five fiber cement profiles we pre-finish; we also finish LP SmartSide board & batten.

Getting the proportions right

Board and batten spacing
Batten spacingEffect
12″ on centerBusy, cottage-scale rhythm
16″ on centerThe common default; aligns with stud layout
24″ on centerCalmer, more modern spacing

Battens are typically 2½″ or 3½″ wide fiber cement trim. Because we pre-finish panels and battens together, the finished wall has no color break between plane and batten — a visible flaw when field-painted components come from different lots. See coating and color options ⇒
